It’s fitting that my last post (so long ago!) was about Golden Tate, because his signing yesterday with the Lions of Detroit has me thinking about free agency and the way we as fans think about athletes changing teams. Maybe it’s the afterglow of the Seahawks winning the Superbowl little more…

A quote that keeps coming back to me. “The interesting thing about basketball is that it is played by people.” The wisdom in this simple statement is so profound to me. It explains why, even after a night like tonight, my focus is not on the resulting score but on the resulting health and demeanor of the fifteen people who played out the game. I have a great deal of respect for the balancing act the team is able to pull day in and day out and have the immense privilege of being able to relate to each member of the team as more than another component of a sport team…another x and o on a whiteboard. I think it is easy to forget that the goals and ambitions of others are not necessarily akin to our own aspirations of the present or future. I saw a lot of heart from people who have been given every reason to act with much less passion. I heard the excitement of a crowd who recognized the same simple fun that a game can bring. I felt the frustration of someone with the singular investment of a simple fan feels. In the end, the time hit zero and I really only cared about that which matters most: That everyone left the game safe and sound…Having this as my only concern is a luxury I get to enjoy that the coaches don’t. I have no ulterior motives. My place is just to be a member of the family and act as any good family member does, take care of their own. La Familia
